Its very simple, I do 95% of my nymph and buzzer using tip lines.

For me, floating lines fail to hook up far too many takes when fishing buzzers or nymphs but with the tip of the line anchored through the surface this acts as a ‘weight’ to set the hook better. I’ve tried and tested this many times and stand by it.

The choice of tip line very much depends on the wind speed and depth of the fish.

Lighter winds and fish top 6 feet = Slow tip lines 3′ and 6′

Fresh to strong winds and fish lying top 8 feet = 6′ fast tip

Fresh to strong winds and fish lying deep or hot and sunny with fish deep = 12′ fast tip.

If you rate yourself as a beginner or intermediate caster then I recommend buying a fly line 1 rating above your rod rating. i.e. if you have a #7 rod select a #8 line. This will help your casting enormously.
